Program Overview
The B-to-A Upgrade program is designed for students who hold an active Class B CDL and want to upgrade to a Class A commercial driver's license. The program covers the ELDT theory requirements specific to combination vehicles and provides behind-the-wheel preparation for the Class A skills test components not previously required for Class B. Completion of this program does not guarantee a CDL upgrade or employment.
Who This Program Is For
- Students who currently hold an active Class B CDL
- Students who want to operate combination vehicles (tractor-trailer) requiring a Class A CDL
- Students who need to complete ELDT theory requirements for the Class A upgrade
- Students who have obtained a Class A CLP and are ready to begin combination vehicle skills preparation
Admissions & Eligibility Requirements
- 1Active Class B CDL (not expired, not suspended, not revoked)
- 2Valid Texas driver's license
- 3Current DOT medical examiner's certificate (medical card)
- 4Class A Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) — required before behind-the-wheel training begins
- 5CLP must be held for a minimum of 14 days before the Class A CDL skills test
- 6No disqualifying offenses under 49 CFR Part 383
What Students Learn
Program Structure
Online & In-Person Components
ELDT theory for the upgrade is completed online. Behind-the-wheel preparation is conducted in person using combination vehicles. Scheduling is coordinated through the student portal after enrollment is confirmed.
Student Progress & Completion Requirements
Students must complete all assigned upgrade ELDT theory modules and pass required assessments. Behind-the-wheel components require completion of all assigned sessions and instructor sign-off. ELDT completion is reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
What Happens Next
After completing all program requirements, your ELDT upgrade completion will be reported to the FMCSA TPR. You may then schedule your Class A CDL skills test at a Texas DPS location. Diesel Xtrem offers test-truck rental for students who need a Class A vehicle for their exam. Passing the skills test and visiting a DPS office to upgrade your CDL are steps you complete independently with the Texas DPS.
